Even before today's loss, it was very unlikely that the Phillies would catch the New York Mets in the N.L. East. But, despite a rough season Philadelphia has found themselves right in the thick of the NL wildcard race. On the heels of picking up Jamie Moyer to shore up the pitching staff, the Phils have now brought in veteran and former Phillie-killer
Jeff Conine to beef up the outfield bench and possibly give all-world first baseman Ryan Howard a break now and then.
Conine is a good pickup for Philadelphia. He's a proven leader who's been liked in every clubhouse he's been in and unlike most of the Phillies' roster, he owns two World Series rings. That kind of leadership and experience can always help a young team trying to make a playoff push. Philadelphia fans, who are still reluctant to believe the Phils will actually make the postseason, should at least be happy the front office is making some moves to try to win now instead of completely cleaning house and tossing in the towel.
